Artist’s Statement
Ceramics is often a form of art that
doesn't either stir our emotions deeply, or strain
the attention of the most intellectual part of our
minds. I attempt to make pieces which do both. I do
want my work to claim attention and create an
advocate for the eccentric pot and how it will fit
into your life. I do want my work to appeal to
perceptions, feelings, experience, and memory. All
clay artists desire their work to do three things:
get the viewer to look, to touch, and to engage
daily.
The Far East
clearly influences some of my processes; however I
eschew traditional basic shapes in favor of more
interpretive forms. I conceptualize the end piece
and work towards this image. I frequently use
additional materials such as wood, wire, on-glaze
transfers to achieve my goal.
At all stages good
technical practice is evident but not overly so that
technique slavishly dictates the scope of my vision.
However, at the end of the day, I respect the final
arbiter of my art: the kiln.
